MTV is airing the eighth season of RuPaul’s drag competition show RuPauls Drag Race, which premieres Sunday night at 9pm ET/pt on MTV.
Season 8 was the highest-rated season on MTV at 7.6 million viewers and a 1.5 demo rating in adults 18-49, while season 9 had a 1 million rating and a 0.9 demo rating.
Season 8 also featured a number of new queens, including Drag Race’s first female winner, Alyssa Edwards.
“The season is filled with many of the most incredible new queens,” said MTV Networks president of original programming, Matt Lauer.
“As we head into season 9, we are seeing a new and exciting crop of new and incredible queens.”
RuPauls drag queen and Drag Race season 9 winner Drag Queen Bianca Del Rio is the latest to join the show.
She joins a group of other queens including Sasha Velour, Raven, Adore Delano, and Roxxxy Andrews.
Season 9 also features a reunion of the “RuPaul: The Next Generation” cast.
“Bianca’s a great addition to the cast,” said executive producer Marc Guggenheim.
“She has a lot of experience and is a good example of how to create an entertaining and fun season.”
Season 9 premieres May 25 on MTV Networks.
